If they use a re-skee, the second score will be counted even if it is lower than the original score. Match Play Skeeball Rules A match will consist of two teams playing a best of Seven 7 or Nine 9 series, depending on the league size and number of machines first team to win 4 or 5 games wins the match.
Teams will roll at the same time. Each player will roll three consecutive balls, and no player may roll more than 3 balls in any given game. Skeeball etiquette requires both players to pause and wait before they roll the 9th and final ball. The person with the higher score rolls first.
Winning team gets a point toward the total tally and play continues into the next game. If the final score results in a tie, there will be a tie breaker round as determined by the host. Relay: Each member of the team present will roll one of the 9 balls.
If less than 9 players are present the team will rotate through their players in the same order as they began the frame.
The team with the highest score wins that round. Blind Folded: One roller will be blind folded and led to the machine where they will roll one full frame 9 balls. Joseph Fourestier Simpson of New Jersey is credited with the original invention and patent of the game in Two businessmen, William Nice, Jr.
Although they sold the first alley relatively quickly, business was rather slow for the next few years. The company took a huge hit when Nice unexpectedly died in January of He took over the company, renamed it and grew it until he finally sold the business to businessman with even bigger pockets. From here, Skee Ball took off as a national phenomenon. The newly renamed National Skee-Ball Company began to hold tournaments with thousands of dollars in prizes as promotional events.
Today, Skee Ball is owned by Bay Tek Entertainment and remains a staple in gaming locations around the world. Because of its proliferation in bars, college campuses and its generational popularity, Skee-Ball looks to be a game that will never really go away. If you want to play a rousing game of Skee Ball today, you have many, many places that you can go. Many retro bars now also have Skee Ball machines right beside the pool tables. These machines have become fixtures at bars looking to attract bar-goers from multiple generations.
These bars will typically feature Skee Ball alongside other retro games like pinball and classic arcade games. And many bars and establishments host Skee Ball leagues and tournaments for serious but fun competition. Although Skeeball can be played in a tournament format, for this first section we are going to talk about the rules and game play of Skee Ball as they relate to arcade play. Skee-ball is essentially what they call a redemption game, which basically just means that players receive a certain number of tickets for certain score ranges, with the highest scores being awarded the greatest amount of tickets.
When taken together, these tickets can usually be used at a Redemption Counter to trade for prizes-prizes ranging from small toys and stuffed animals to expensive electronic devices. This game is played on a lane, much like bowling only considerably shorter. Although this lane starts out flat-from where the players stand-it has a gradual incline as it makes its way up. Each skeeball ramp in the arcade measures between 10 and 13 feet depending on the game manufacturer, although the 13 foot-ramp machines are the only ones used for tournament play.
At the very end of the inclined ramp there is a sudden jump in the incline called the "ball hop. The scoring area on a skeeball game consists of a bullseye-like setup with several circles or rings. These rings essentially direct the balls into holes of varying point values, with the smallest and hardest to reach holes having the most overall point value.
On most skee ball games there are five rings. The largest and easiest to reach circle is typically worth 10 points, and as the rings go up and get gradually smaller the holes within those rings award graduated point values of 20, 30, 40, and finally 50 points-the smallest ring on the game into which getting the ball is a true challenge.
Players begin a game of skeeball by placing the required type of currency into the mechanism at the front or side of the machine. Skeeball games can be outfitted to accept quarters, tokens, or even Player Cards that subtract the amount needed to play the game from the card balance.
Once the appropriate amount of currency has been added to the machine, players simply push a button or lever, which then releases the balls into a holding area or queue. For one game of skeeball players typically receive nine balls. These balls are made from either polished masonite or heavy plastic and each ball measures approximately three inches in diameter. Once the balls have been released, players take the first ball in the holding queue and roll it up the ramp towards the scoring rings. Additionally, teams are only eligible for either the 50 or additional bonus points.
Both teams are able to win these points IE both teams can cheer for the other team and can win spirit points. Note: As with all scores in Skeeball we drop the zero from points awarded — This means that would be 10 and 50 would be 5 in this application. After the 6th frame of each match, a mystery round will be played. The following specialty rounds are selected and played at the discretion of the host.
Speed: Both teams will present one roller who will each begin to throw their balls at the command of the host. The first player to roll all of their balls and have the machine flash game over or for their score to flash will be considered the winner.
Relay: Each member of the team present will roll one of the 9 balls. If less than 9 players are present the team will rotate through their players in the same order as they began the frame. E Rollers Bob, Jane, Jack, Kelly, will continue in the same order until all 9 balls are rolled The team with the highest score wins that round.
Speed Relay: Using the above relay rules the winning team will be decided not by the total score but by the first team to have their machine count all 9 balls rolled and the game to be declared over, indicated by the flashing score or the Game Over message.
Blind Folded: One roller will be blindfolded and led to the machine where they will roll one full frame 9 balls. Teammates may assistance through verbal direction but are not allowed to physically aid the blinded folded roller.
The top score between the two teams wins the round. Skee-off: Teams choose one roller from the opposing team to compete against the player the opponents have chosen from their team. The roller with the highest score after a single round of 9 balls wins a bonus points for their team. Teams will roll at the same time.
