Switch your driver to an iron club when you are less than yards away from the putting green. Easier said than done, right? Most golf bags will contain irons 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, so knowing which one to grab can be a little confusing.
As a rule of thumb, the closer you are to the green, the higher number iron you will want to use. Wedges are similar to irons, but are only used when you are really close to the putting green. They allow you to better control your shot and direct the ball closer to the hole. Your bag should contain at least a pitching wedge if not a few others. All wedges differentiate in degrees of loft and can help you get out of sandy situations. These clubs have one purpose: To get the ball in the hole.
Putters are the most important club in the bag. This club will make or break your game. Players can use hybrids in the fairway, to get out of the rough or even to hit out of a sand trap. Most Popular. What Are Hybrid Golf Clubs? About Hybrid Golf Clubs. It is important to remember that while most manufacturers match the hybrid number to the corresponding iron number, the best indicator of distance when looking at hybrids is the loft. Most 3 hybrids match up closely with a 3 iron in loft. Loft being equal, most hybrids will perform better with regards to distance and forgiveness. Irons are generally used when you are less than yards away from the green.
The closer you are to the green, the higher the iron you will use. A standard set of irons consists of 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 irons and the pitching wedge PW. The 3 and 4 irons are harder to hit than the higher number irons. Many golfers, especially ladies, seniors and higher handicap golfers, are changing to a modified standard golf set that replaces the 3 and 4 iron with higher lofted woods like the 7 and 9 woods. We think this is a sensible trend and one that a beginning golfer should consider.
Higher lofted woods, like the 7 and 9 wood are easier to hit than a 3 or 4 iron and result in comparable distances. Wedges are really just specialty irons. The first wedge is the pitching wedge PW , which is usually about degrees in loft. Wedges generally increase in increments of 4 degrees loft. So wedges commonly come in 48, 52, 56, 60 and 64 degree lofts. The PW is the highest lofted iron in a standard set and lowest loft of the wedges.
We also manufacture a very special wedge called the last wedge — which has a 68 degree loft. Wedges are extremely useful to your game and most golfers have a few of them. Wedges are generally designed as "blade clubs" because you are close enough to the green that the game improvement design elements such as wide soles are less important. The need for increased shot control and shot shaping, which blade design encourages, becomes the more important technology for a good wedge design.
A putter is a golf club with a special purpose: getting the ball into the hole. After you have slammed your drive yards right into the middle of the fairway, hit your second shot yards into the sand trap, and then wedged out onto the green, it is time to "putt for dough. At Pinemeadow Golf, we provide you a huge selection of putters and we have a good reason for it which will be explained later. After decades of experience in the golf club manufacturing business, building millions of clubs for huge numbers of happy customers, we have noticed one thing.
Most golfers have as their minimum arsenal one set of irons , one or two hybrids , multiple wedges , several drivers and a variety of putters. This is because your foursome all gets together at the tee where you use your driver. The pressure is high to perform well.
Professional golfers or low handicappers often carry at least 4 different wedges to help them pinpoint exact distances to the green on their approach shots. The biggest difference between the different wedges offered is the degrees of loft which produce varying heights in the air and distance. A golfer carries one putter in their bag on any given round of golf. There are many different styles of putters that can be used like a blade, mallet, and a half mallet putter. It all depends on the style or feel of a putter that you like.
Putters can also be used just off the green especially if it can be rolled to like from the fringe or apron of the green. Now that you know the various types of golf clubs used, how do you know which golf club to use and when? But, could you use your putter in the fairway?
Yes, you could. Should you? Probably not especially if it is more than yards away. I am listing here what most typical golfers would use in certain areas of the golf course. A guide for those just starting out. The purpose in golf is to get the golf ball in the hole in the least amount of strokes as possible. Distance in golf is measured in yardages. There are a number of ways you can estimate or measure this distance. Once you know this distance, then you can select the golf club that will best get you to the hole.
For example, if the distance is yards to the hole or to the green, then you want to use your yard club. You may have an idea from experience with a few of your clubs. I pulled this information from my other post on Golf Club Distances and Driving Distances for Women and am providing it in a chart form here.
Foresight Sports provided the numbers below for female amateurs or female recreational golfers. It is a pretty good size range of avergae distances for each golf club, but that is how golf is and every golfer is different. There are many factors that play into club distance from athleticism, age, gender, clubs, golf skill, swing mechanics, etc. But this hopefully provides a good baseline to start. Hybrids are not listed. Typically, they correlate with the same numbered iron give or take.
